The Ophthalmic Society of Toscane has honoured Dr. Aslanides in Siena for his innovative work in Ophthalmology by offering him the "Pietro Ispano" award. [Pietro Ispano (real name Pedro Julião, was one of the most notable maestri of the School of Medicine. He was an illustrious philosopher, personal doctor to Emperor Frederick II, and the first who used medical herbs to cure ophthalmic diseases. In 1276 he became Pope John XXI.]
